Departing from the Norm

Two recent restaurant outings led to a rediscovery of some fun wines for summer. Given the hot, steamy, humid days that characterize most of this summer, a nice cool glass of Pinto Grigio (or Pinot Gris) or Sauvignon Blanc definitely refreshes and rejuvenates a parched palate. For many wine drinkers, this may be a departure from the norm as the Wine Institute in California suggests, “California Chardonnay, Cabernet, and Merlot are still by far the most popular varietal wines in the U.S.” Instead of sticking with the norm, give a different varietal the chance to please the palate.

A nice light bodied Pinot Grigio, originating from California or Italy, may hit the spot on a hot, humid day. It delivers a light, crisp, and fresh experience to the wine drinker with notes of pear, melon, kiwi and other tropical fruits. A local bistro and wine bar serves the 2008 California Gnarly Head Pinot Grigio (approximately $11/bottle retail). Paired with a fish taco with spicy mayonnaise and chimichurri sauce, it’s light, citrus character complimented the dish and the hot weather quite nicely.

An alternative to the Gnarly Head Pinot Grigio is the 2010 California J Pinot Gris (approximately $15/bottle retail). It delivers wonderful citrus and vanilla flavors to the palate while also being vibrant and crisp. J Vineyards & Winery recommends the Pinot Gris as a “sipping” wine or as a wine to serve with Mexican, Thai or other Asian cuisines. In general, both of these pinot grigio’s taste lovely on their own, but pair well with seafood or spicy dishes.

The second restaurant outing for sushi found a great match in the Ferrari Carrano Fume Blanc (also known as Sauvignon Blanc) and sushi. This wine possesses similar characteristics to the Pinot Grigio & Pinot Gris, yet it has a little more body to it. It offers crisp, tropical flavors while balancing the tartness and sweetness of the sauvignon blanc grape. Swishing this fume blanc around in the palate lends to a refreshing and bright taste of a artfully crafted affordable wine. Pairing the Ferrari Carrano Fume Blanc with a spicy soy wrapped tuna roll or spicy soy wrapped crab roll serves as an instant palate pleaser. As with the Pinot Grigio, this Fume Blanc works quite well with sushi or seafood.

So, don’t be a wine snob! Set down the Cabernet or Chardonnay and depart from the norm. Take a moment to try a different varietal. Sit on the porch with a friend for a nice conversation and glass of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc or enjoy the opportunity to pair one of these wines with a fun meal.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

I recently took a nutrition class and really enjoyed it. Given the debate over high fructose corn syrup, this is what my professor had to say about it:

Fructose generally is found as a natural ingredient in fruits and sugars (including honey), but it is found in such small amounts that the body does not store it as fat.

However, High Fructose Corn Syrup (also called corn sugar on labels now), which is processed to reach a specific 'sweetness'...
  • is bad for you despite some researchers saying that there is not enough evidence
  • the fructose is not all converted to glycogen (stored form of glucose in live; key energy source for body)
  • a higher percent of fructose is converted to fat instead of broken down for energy use
My professor recommended staying away from products that use high fructose corn syrup in the top five ingredients.

Madelyn Pics

Just three pictures of Madelyn.

Madelyn uses her Little People house as a chair.

Madelyn is trying in vain to reach the toy microwave. Look at her feet she's on her tippy toes.
Stretch, reach, I got it!!
